Virginia is unusual in that it rewards good driving with safe driving points — and a voluntary driver improvement clinic can add some. This article explains the general rules.
Quick note: The Right Way is a private driving school, not the Virginia DMV or a law firm. This is general information, not legal advice. Eligibility and point awards are determined by the Virginia DMV.
How safe driving points work
Per the Virginia DMV, you earn one safe driving point for each full calendar year you hold a valid Virginia license and drive without a violation or suspension — up to a maximum of +5. Safe driving points offset demerit points on your balance (for example, a +5 balance and a 4-point ticket leaves you at +1).
Earning safe points with a clinic
Voluntarily completing a DMV-approved driver improvement clinic may add safe driving points to your record (generally available once within a set period). Whether you're eligible and how many points are awarded is decided by the Virginia DMV, not by us.
Court-ordered is different
If a clinic is court-ordered, the court decides whether safe driving points are awarded, and you must provide court documentation to the provider — see court-ordered driver improvement in VA.
Important limits
Safe driving points don't erase a conviction — they only offset your point balance, and the conviction can still affect insurance. For how demerit points and insurance interact, see Virginia demerit points vs. insurance points.
