"How long do points stay on my record?" is one of the most common questions after a North Carolina ticket. The tricky part is that there isn't one clock - there are two, and the conviction itself can outlast both. Here is how it generally works.
Quick note: The Right Way is a private driving school, not the NC DMV, the Department of Insurance, or a law firm. This is general information, not legal advice. For your actual record, contact the DMV and your insurer directly.
DMV license points
The NC DMV assigns license points for convictions. For license-suspension purposes, the DMV generally looks at points accumulated within a three-year period - accumulating 12 or more points in that window can lead to a suspension.
A couple of things surprise people:
- The point count that matters for suspension is based on a rolling window, so older points carry less weight over time.
- If a license is suspended and later reinstated, the DMV generally cancels the prior points - but that is a suspension outcome, not a shortcut.
- The conviction itself can remain on your driving record longer than the points influence a suspension decision.
An eligible Driver Improvement Clinic may subtract some license points, but eligibility and timing are decided by the NC DMV.
Insurance points (SDIP)
Insurance points are a separate system under the Safe Driver Incentive Plan, regulated by the NC Department of Insurance. SDIP looks back over an experience period:
- Generally three years for most convictions.
- Up to five years for certain convictions carrying four or more SDIP points (other than speeding over the posted limit) that occur on or after July 1, 2025.

Why the conviction can outlast the points
It's worth separating three different "clocks": how long points weigh on a suspension decision, how long an insurance surcharge applies, and how long the conviction shows on your record. They are not the same, which is why two people with the same ticket can get different answers.
Where to confirm your record
- License points / suspension status โ the NC DMV.
- Premium impact and surcharge length โ your insurance provider.
- Your citation or court outcome โ the court on your paperwork, or a licensed attorney.
How we fit in
The Right Way offers defensive driving / traffic-safety courses (online and in person), taught by AAA-certified instructors. We don't assign or remove points and can't promise a particular effect on your record or insurance - those are decided by the DMV and your insurer.
